ADULT ROWING

ABOUT OUR ADULT ROWING PROGRAM

Casitas Rowing has several ways for adults to become involved either as rowers or coxswains. Our Adult Rowing programs are year-round, and teams are roughly divided up into three co-ed groups of Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced rowers.

Benefits of ADULT ROWING

  • A great social group

  • Even just a few practices each week help keep the doctor happy

  • Each practice can give us about 3 days of improved mood

  • Something to dream about, and to strive for

  • Something to be passionate about

  • Do something different, that is always challenging us mentally and physically

ADULT TEAM
PRACTICE Schedule:

Tuesdays & Thursdays: 6:30-8:10 a.m.
Sunday: 7:00-9:00 a.m.

Those who work or have other obligations can leave at 8:10, while others are asked to help close up after practice, which can go until 8:25. Many people leave practice and go right to the lake’s Marina Cafe to all have breakfast and coffee together — we are truly a team, on and off the water.

We look forward to meeting you!

Beginner/Novice Rowers:

Beginner adult rowers learn in a no-pressure environment at a pace that is right for them. They are practicing at the same days/times as our intermediate and advanced rowers, but in different boats and with their own coach. Rowing is a challenging sport (much harder than it looks on YouTube or in the movies!), but we all support each other and improve together.

Typically, athletes are with this group anywhere from a few weeks to a few months until they move up with the intermediate athletes. Most of this is done in sculling boats (two oars per person) to cover the basics of rowing language, basic drills, water safety, boat handling, rowing technique, and of course, how to make boats go fast.

Intermediate Rowers:

Our intermediate rowing group has a wide range of skill, fitness levels and goals. We do lineups for practice and at regattas so athletes are in boats with other rowers of comparable skill and fitness level as best we can.

This rowing class is comprised of both recreational and competitive athletes. Some of our rowers have decades of experience and some have just started in the past year; some will choose to attend races, and some will not.

advanced Rowers:

This advanced rowing team is comprised of athletes with previous collegiate or high school rowing experience, or longtime members. Advanced practices are geared toward top-end fitness and developing gold-medal boat speed of our crews. Boats are balanced, fast and we use elite-level equipment such as RESOLUTES, Empachers, FluidDesigns, and Concept2 oars.

This is a competitive group, and in addition to training with the team, rowers are expected to do outside workouts. Some of our athletes cannot attend all three scheduled practices, but they train on their own at the gym, etc. Athletes need to handle high stroke rates, must be able to contribute to the speed of the boat, actively help balance the shells, and be coachable and positive team players.

There is no place in this club at any level for bad attitudes, negativity, or “clique” behavior. We are one team and support each other.

While all our masters’ programs are co-ed, a good portion of the time we do separate athletes into men’s and women’s boats at this advanced level.

Our advanced rowing teams practice in singles, doubles, pairs, quads, fours, and eights, and lineups change each practice depending on who has signed up that day. We will row in light rain and light wind, but that isn’t very often. Practices are occasionally cancelled for weather, like stronger rain, lower temperatures, or high winds, and unfortunately, we can’t offer refunds for weather cancellations.

We understand that adult rowers have lives outside of the sport, and practicing with us might take some juggling. However, once people get started practicing, they usually want to make this a weekly part of their life.

PRIVATE LESSONS:

Private rowing lessons are available to all athletes. You can set up 60-minute lessons in a one- or two-person boat with an instructor through our Club Director Wendy.
